Amanda Crandall

Landscape#115, Wyoming

I like the irony of something which appears limitless to our eyes, which we experience on an infinite scale, being in a space that is only a few inches; the experience takes place in your mind. My paintings are miniatures; ranging from 1 inch to 11 inches. These pieces have a deliberate affinity to mid 19th century American landscape painting. The paintings small size and appearance of being a tiny piece of a 19th century heroic landscape underscores the reality that we have little pristine land left. The choice of shape reinforces the nostalgic, or souvenir, quality of the pieces.
