Susan Maakestad

Susan Maakestad is Associate Professor at Memphis College of Art where she has taught since 1997. She earned a M.F.A. from The University of Iowa in 1987. She has received many awards including a regional N.E.A. fellowship. She has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her work has been included in the publication “New American Paintings”. Her work has been exhibited nationally and in Nashville most recently at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Gallery in November 2007.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am fascinated by the disregarded marginal spaces of the post urban landscape. Exaggerated light and color transform the mundane into something beautiful. The subject is interpreted abstractly. The expressive paint handling fills up the empty places with a sense of human contact.
